August 4, 2024, Ayer, MA: Deep Ultra-violet (DUV) Transmission Gratings, especially those which transmit wavelength below 300nm were previously the domain of expensive Etched Fused Silica Gratings.

Omega Optical has introduced our patent-pending transmissive grating which uniquely transmits wavelengths below 200nm while maintaining high efficiency at an uncommonly affordable price point. Development for this product was driven by demand for affordable and serviceable field portable UV spectrometers, which are increasing in applications such as water quality testing, environmental monitoring, and counterfeit detection where price is an important variable holding back wider adoption. Existing solutions use etched fused silica gratings which are a significant portion of the BOM cost for current field portable UV spectrometers, and these fused silica gratings are typically constrained to binary profiles which limit instrument design flexibility.
Laser Focus World recently recognized the DUV Transmission Grating as a Silver-Level Honoree of the 2024 Innovators Awards, a who’s who within the growing photonics and optics market.
This innovative product was conceived by the team of Michael Camire, Dave Ventola, Zbynek Ryzi, Robert Holmes, Arlo Towle, and Mike Fitzgerald (pictured below, left to right).
By using a novel material set and manufacturing process, we have created a replication process for transmission gratings which increase the efficiency of wavelengths below 250nm, where previous replicated solutions struggled to transmit any photons, and the addition of blazed grating profiles significantly expands the design solution space for Instrument Manufacturers.
